What does burnout feel like?

You're exhausted in a way that sleep, weekends and even holidays don't fix.
You dread the start of the working week before the weekend has even begun.
You've started to feel detached or cynical about work you used to care about.
You can't concentrate, and small decisions feel overwhelming.
Your body is telling you too: poor sleep, headaches, picking up every bug going.
You feel guilty for struggling, and you've lost sight of who you are outside work.

None of this means you're weak or failing.
It means you've been running on empty for far too long.

What is burnout?

The World Health Organization describes burnout as a result of chronic workplace stress that hasn't been successfully managed. It isn't a personal weakness. It's what happens when the demands on you outweigh the support and recovery you get, for too long.

Exhaustion

Feeling depleted, drained and running on empty, physically and emotionally.

Distance from your work

Feeling negative, cynical or detached from a job you once cared about.

Reduced effectiveness

Feeling you're no longer good at what you do, even when you are.

How burnout recovery coaching works: Survive, Rebuild, Thrive

Recovery isn't a straight line, but it is possible. My approach combines coaching and NLP in three gentle stages, at a pace that works for you.

1

Survive

Rest, take stock and create breathing space. We identify what's draining you, and the first small changes that make the days feel more manageable.

2

Rebuild

Reconnect with your identity, values and strengths. We rebuild your confidence and the boundaries that protect your energy.

3

Thrive

Make choices that let you be yourself again, whether that means changing how you work, or moving towards something new.

Do I have to leave my job?

Not necessarily. Burnout recovery isn't about pushing you out of a career. For some people, recovery means new boundaries, a different way of working or a conversation with their employer. For others, it becomes clear that the job itself is the problem.

Either way, you'll make the decision from a place of clarity, not exhaustion.

If you do decide it's time for something new, I can support that too, with career change coaching.

Why I do this

I've been where you are

I spent nearly 20 years in education, and burnout crept up on me slowly, until I couldn't ignore it any longer. I lost my confidence and my energy, and I questioned who I was outside my job.

"Piece by piece, with rest, boundaries, reflection and support, I began rebuilding a version of me."

Burnout changed my life, but it also led me here, to helping others recover. I know how heavy it feels, and I know there is a way back.

Burnout looks different in every job

Burnout can happen in any role where the demands keep growing and the recovery never comes. I work with people from healthcare, the public sector, charities, corporate roles, retail management and more.

Whether it's an always-on culture, constant restructures, caring for others all day, or simply doing the work of two people, the result is the same: you're running on empty, and something has to change.

Burnout questions people ask me

What is the difference between stress and burnout?

Stress usually feels like too much: too many demands, too much pressure. Burnout often feels like not enough: not enough energy, motivation or care left to give. Stress can ease when the pressure drops. Burnout tends to linger, even after a holiday or a weekend off.

Is burnout coaching the same as therapy?

No. Coaching is forward-focused and practical. It helps you understand what led to burnout, rebuild your energy and boundaries, and decide what comes next. It isn't medical or mental health treatment. If you're experiencing depression, anxiety or other mental health difficulties, please speak to your GP, and coaching can sit alongside that support.

Do I have to leave my job to recover from burnout?

Not necessarily. For some people, recovery means changing how they work, setting firmer boundaries or asking for adjustments. For others, it becomes clear that the job itself is the problem. Coaching helps you work out which is true for you, without pressure either way.

How long does burnout recovery take?

It's different for everyone, and recovery is rarely a straight line. Many people feel a noticeable shift within the first few sessions, as they start to understand what's happening and make small changes. Full recovery can take longer, and that's normal.

Can I have coaching while I'm signed off work?

Often, yes. Many people find it helpful to use time off to understand what happened and plan their return or next step. If you're under the care of a doctor, it's a good idea to check with them first.

Is the coaching online?

Yes. All sessions are on Zoom, so you can join from home, wherever you are in the world.

If you need more than coaching

Coaching isn't a substitute for medical or mental health care. If you're struggling to cope, please contact your doctor. If you're in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, please get help straight away.
